I simulated some 8-bit CRC polynomials and uploaded the results in the file gallery. However, until now I haven't succeeded in attaching the file into this post...

Following contributions from several good folk, simulating the performance of various CRC choices (all of which tended to agree), the operative version of JANUS (ver 1.0) as submitted to NATO to become a STANAG will have a 'fixed' 8-bit CRC that is different from the existing truncated 16-bit CRC.

A CRC8 routine has been implemented in MATLAB and is now being used for JANUS ver 1.0 transmissions and decoding.

When decoding a waveform the example decoding implementations that will be generated for ver 1.0 will test both the original truncated 16-bit CRC and the new 8-bit CRC to see which one matches, if either! This will maintain backward compatibility transparently.
