I've been visiting Ivor Nissen at FWG and we've come up with some good progress and ideas to move JANUS forward, more on that later. One thing that Ivor pointed out, though, was that users who are not logged in cannot download (clicking on the pdf symbol causes no response) whereas they should be reminded to register (if they've not already done so) and login in order to download.

So if you or anyone you know has experienced this problem, remember to log in and please do let us know if you find any other odd or unhelpful behaviours on this site so we can try and fix it!

Many Thanks
John.

When I am trying to edit my post, I get the error message:

Notice: this variable may not be empty: $_POST%22thread_sort_mode%22

after clicking on post without having the changes saved.

Further to my visit to Ivor Nissen at FWG, there are a number of things that became clear and/or were developed during that week. In short:
1) The current 'fixed' allocation table does not work well for everyone, being an attempt to keep most people happy most of the time. Ivor's proposal is to replace the original fixed bit allocation table with one that includes a separate allocation to each country and major organisation using JANUS, so that they can define their own table for 27 of the bits, provided of course that they publish their definition for any use that is intended to provide interoperability with other nations and users.
2) Ivor was very clear that, for analogue electronics simplicity as well as for other reasons, we need to implement the 2009 agreement to move from using a HFM sweep to a FH sequence.
3) In order to provide the maximum flexibility to users and implementers, while offering commercial companies a business model to build and sell JANUS-compliant devices, the JANUS standard should consist only of a transmission standard, not a receiver or decoder. While we intend to continue to offer example receiver and decoder implementations to help folk get starting with operating JANUS, these will not reflect any standard. Even the encoding example we offer will only be examples, not in any sense a reference standard.

Ciao
John.
